We are Chalmers Solar Team

Chalmers Solar Team is a Swedish team started in last 2018 who first participated in the 2019 edition of BWSC. As such 2025 will mark our third running in the competition.

Like the name implies we are based at Chalmers University and consist of students all the way from early bachleors to late masters (and some who graduate along the way). The project is run entirely by students and completely in each students free time with full time studies on the side.

We’re growing quickly and each year we’re making marked improvements in our cars and processes. 2025 will be no different and we believe that our car for this year has a good chance at making a leap forward in the standings.

The Competitions

Bridgestone World Solar Challenge

At the end of summer 2025 Chalmers Solar Team will be competing in Australia in the challenger class. We’ll arrive in Australia a little over a month before the race commences to set everything up, test the car, go through scrutineering, set a qualifying time and finally compete in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.

But before that a car is needed, so we’re working hard to complete ours and test it thuroghly before sending it off to Australia for it’s first race!

iLumen European Solar Challenge

After competing in BWSC we’ll go home and rest, but soon thereafter a new team will begin to be recruited. This team will then continue using the 2025 Challenger to test new ideas and improvements, as well as making sure team works as one.

The learning period will culminate in the running of iESC with the 2025 challenger. This provides a intense but invaluable hands-on experience with actually racing that you won’t get the chance for anywhere else.

They will carry the torch and defend our title as the best Swedish team, and hopefully even more than that!

We build Solar Cars

Aerodynamics & Composites

The Aerodynamics & Composites group plays a crucial role in ensuring our solar car achieves optimal performance on the road. This team is dedicated to designing and refining the car’s body to minimize drag through advanced CAD modeling and aerodynamic simulations. Using CAD tools, they analyze airflow and optimize shapes to improve efficiency. Beyond virtual design, the team brings concepts to life by crafting molds and performing precise layups to create lightweight yet durable composite components. Their work in balancing form and function is essential for building a vehicle that can compete at the highest level in solar racing.

Mechanics & Dynamics

The Mechanics & Dynamics group is responsible for designing and manufacturing most of the car’s mechanical components. Every custom part is designed in-house by our dedicated students, leveraging university workshops and collaborating with our generous sponsors for manufacturing. This team focuses on creating the car’s frame, suspension, and steering systems while prioritizing driver safety and adherence to race regulations. Their work combines theoretical design with hands-on craftsmanship, ensuring every component is both functional and reliable for high-performance racing.

Electronics & Powertrain

The Electronics & Powertrain group designs and creates the car’s entire electrical system, divided into High Voltage and Low Voltage teams. The High Voltage team manages the car’s energy system, including the in-house-designed batteries, MPPTs, solar array, motor, and motor controller, ensuring efficient energy storage and transfer to the drivetrain. The Low Voltage team focuses on integrating these systems with advanced ECUs, which control the car, collect and transmit telemetry data, and ensure the exterior lighting complies with road regulations. Together, these teams build a seamless and reliable electrical system that powers the car to success.

Logistics & Marketing

The Logistics & Marketing team ensures the smooth operation and visibility of our project. On the logistics side, the team plans and coordinates all aspects of transportation, accommodation, and resource management to ensure the team and car are prepared for every race and event. The marketing side focuses on promoting the team, securing partnerships, and engaging with sponsors and the public through strategic campaigns and social media. Together, this group ensures the project runs seamlessly behind the scenes while showcasing our mission to the world.

Strategy & Telemetry

The Strategy team is responsible for planning and optimizing the car’s performance during races. By analyzing weather data, terrain, and energy consumption, they create detailed plans to ensure the car operates as efficiently as possible throughout the race. The team leverages data acquisition systems to gather real-time insights from the car and relies on advanced simulations to predict performance under various conditions. They also manage communications between the car and the support crew, enabling swift adjustments to strategies during the race. With a focus on precision, foresight, and adaptability, the Strategy team ensures that every kilometer is calculated, every resource is maximized, and every decision drives the team closer to success.
